IKIGAI (生きがい) :The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life

Authors: Héctor García and Francesc Miralles

Genre:Self-help Book

Pages:208

Ikigai, the term that defines the entire book is a Japanese concept, which refers to “purpose in life”.The book spans over topics related to “art of living”.The two authors conducted a total of hundred interviews in Ogimi,Okinawa in order to understand the art of staying young while growing old practiced by centenarians and supercentenarians residing there. The book is split into nine separate chapters each covering topics that explain longevity.

“You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics,or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then-to learn.Learn why the world wags and what wags it.That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by,never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting.”

The book manifests an introduction to topics including:Blue zones, logotherapy, flow,’tai chi’,yoga, resilience, and more. There are graphic portrayals of ‘radio taiso’ exercises, yoga,’tai chi’ and ‘qigong’.It highlights issues such as existential crisis (moments where an individual is made to question one’s purpose and meaning of being and is negatively impacted by the cerebration)and expounds on dealing with the cynicism of it.The main purpose of this book is to help one discover their ikigai. Pursuing and nurturing a clearly defined ikigai every day will bring elucidation to one’s life.

“God,give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things which should be changed, and wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.”

This book does not dive into intricate explanations of the above mentioned theories but is the rudiments of much extensive ideologies.Owing to the fact that the book is quite succinct I’d recommend it to be read by all for a long, beatific, ambitious life.
